Why are you running for office?
I am running to be an ally of and an advocate for Governor Hogan’s policies at the federal level. I will address the numerous issues that need attention, including transportation infrastructure, the heroin and opioid addiction epidemic, jobs and business growth in the 6th Congressional District, and safety and security both domestic and international. I will also work to apply free market solutions to the provision of quality healthcare, ensure the availability of quality education, continue to support and mentor women, and fight to uphold this country’s obligations to its veterans. I will approach these issues with an attitude of cooperation to bring people on both sides of the aisle together to get things done in a spirit of community.
Who do you consider your political role model, and why?
President Ronald Reagan — it was an honor to work for him. He exemplified the adage that one person can make a positive difference.
What is your favorite book about politics and policy, and why?
I am fully immersed in politics and policy issues; I read books on other subjects of interest — cooking and art.
What will be your top priority in Congress?
Ensuring that I communicate my approach of empathy and cooperation with anyone to achieve results on the issues listed above. I will work with anyone on either side of the aisle, with warmth and compassion, as I have proven is my approach, to bring people together and to GET THINGS DONE.
What is the biggest issue facing your district?
Overcoming the divisiveness and developing real solutions to the issues that hamper the economic stability and growth of the District — including transportation infrastructure, the heroin and opioid addiction epidemic, ensuring the creation of a favorable environment for the creation of jobs and new businesses, and providing safety and security for all.
What are the three biggest issues facing our country?
(1) Modernizing infrastructure, including transportation; (2) Combatting the heroin and opioid addiction epidemic; and (3) Ensuring public safety and national security.
What is your position on life issues? (abortion, assisted suicide)
I believe in minimizing Federal Government interference in the personal lives of individuals.
What is your position on taxes, spending and the federal deficit?
The process that has begun of reducing the Federal Government’s tax burden is, in my view, precisely right. By reducing the impact of taxes, we will see our businesses grow and provide more job opportunities. The tax code should be simplified and the process made far more transparent, so that hard-working Americans can comply without unnecessary hardship or fear. In terms of spending, I believe that we need to restore fiscal sanity and reduce the federal deficit; this can best be done through measures that increase our national economy.
What is your position on gun rights?
I’m supportive of the Constitution, including the 2nd Amendment and the rights it conveys. I am also for common sense gun restrictions as well as enforcement of current laws and improved background checks for purchasers. I am also supportive of changing reporting procedures for those with mental health problems and who pose threats.
What is your position on the legalization of marijuana?
I support the use of marijuana under a doctor’s prescription for specific medical purposes, but I am concerned that marijuana is a “gateway drug” for many and I thus do not support the legalization of marijuana for recreational use.
What is your position on trade?
I support free trade.
What is your position on foreign policy and military issues?
Under the Constitution, the Federal Government has the duty to “provide for the common defense.” As an national security expert I take this charge quite seriously. We undoubtedly need to evolve our military forces to strengthen our ability to counter 21st century threats. I will fight to ensure that our men and women in uniform have the resources and equipment they need to keep this nation safe and to undertake successfully whatever missions are in the national interest. I will work with both sides of the aisle to advance the national security of this nation. The safety and security of the American people cannot be put at risk due to partisan politics.
Would you support the passage of the Human Life Amendment?
Would you support the passage of the Balanced Budget Amendment?
